We provided sound reinforcement for the Festival of Colors in Ogden — a full sound system, a sound tech, a stagehand and a microphone package, across a twelve-hour day.
Before the recap, the practical note: we do take colour and chalk events, and there is an extra cost attached to them. Powder gets into everything, and the cleanup and wear on the gear are real. We keep equipment dedicated to events like this depending on the size, so it is not a problem — it just needs to be priced honestly up front rather than discovered afterwards.
Ten performances, one stage
Holi is the Hindu spring festival celebrating the victory of good over evil, and a day for playing, laughing, forgiving and repairing relationships. It is best known for the coloured powder, which by the end of the day is on everyone and everything.
More than ten acts came through the stage: yoga instruction, DJ sets, the Mantra Rock Band, Bhakti Fusion Dance, the Butter Thieves, interactive dance with BollyX Utah, and MC and rap artist Caru Das hosting throughout. Attendance runs around 500 to 1,000, so we brought a smaller system than a concert call would need — the right size, not the biggest one.
What twelve hours actually means
It means a crew on site before the first act and still there after the last one, changing over ten different input needs on the same stage. A yoga session, a live band and a DJ set want three completely different setups, and the gap between them is measured in minutes. That is the whole job on a festival like this one: not the peak, the transitions.
